I grew up in Detroit and probably drove by this church all the time… when there were still people in the church.

I’m curious… when did you leave? Did all the whit flight happen after ’68 and the riots?

I left in the early 80’s. the city was already dying, but there were still grand areas that were holding on. I went back last summer, but ended up not taking any real photos. I had meant to go to some of the places you photographed, but somehow had a hard time doing it. I’ll probably write about the experience sometime… strange. Guess that’s why I enjoy seeing the photos you’ve taken there.

I suppose you need a bit of separation from your subject matter. I’ve visited a few times since the mid 90s, and have been surprised at how much of Detroit doesn’t suck. That’s not damning with faint praise, either; it’s just that if you go only on Detroit’s reputation, you’d think that it’s ALL a blasted wasteland.
